"The Quiltmakers Gift"
Minimize

For November we have selected The Quiltmakers Gift by Jeff Brumbeau as the Bloomington Elementary Book of the Month.  We would encourage you to read this book together as a family and then talk about the discussion questions below.  The message of the Quiltmaker and the King is a very powerful one, and can inspire everyone to look for ways that they might bring joy to the lives of others.  Don’t forget to take time to study and discuss the beautiful illustrations.  They add their own special element to this story, and help to make this book one that your children will want to read again and again.  (We have found it has that effect on adults as well!)

 Character Analysis:

            1.  The King

a.       What kind of person do you think the king was at the beginning of the story?  At the end?

b.      Why do you think the king was not happy?

c.       What did the king finally do that made him feel happy?

d.      Why do you think giving all his gifts away made him feel happy?

2.  The Quiltmaker:

            a.  Why do you think she would only give quilts to the poor?

b.  Why do you think she would not give one of her quilts to the king until he had given ALL of his gifts away?

3.  How do you feel when you do something nice for someone else?  Talk about a time when you or your family have done something nice for someone else.  What happened?

4.  Plan an “Act of Kindness” you could do for someone else over the next few weeks.  Write about it in a journal or another special place and read it again and again to inspire yourself to find other ways to do “Acts of Kindness.”
